I am curious for all people interested in Directv as I am also one of them... Why would I pay an upfront cost for HD boxes with or without DVR when I can go to Dish or comcrap and not have to pay upfront cost... I don't see why people would pay that money for a box they are leasing.
You aren't leasing the box from DirectTV. Also, they do give them away for free - its an instant online rebate. Like anything else, they will do it for free, you just have to be an informed customer. Now, the HD DVR boxes still cost $100 after the rebate, but you're not leasing it.

I'm in NJ. I switched from Cablevision to Verizon fios and the PQ in standard def channels was night and day, Fios being better. The HD channels were also better but not as drastic as the standard def difference. I also got a good deal with the triple package. Free HDTV too (19 inch, ehh).
Fios should definately be on your list if it's available in your area.
I am dying for Fios... Still not in my area yet... Can't really get any details on when... I just want to shove Comcasts growing prices up their A** We need competition.

Thats definitely odd... I couldn't tell you. My understanding is that they were purchased.
With Dish, the receiver is mine (not that its any use without the service anyways), I didn't buy it (free with service), and I don't get charged any leasing fee *shrug*
Fios not in my area either. Am going to go with comcast for now. Maybe at another time, or when we move we can give the dish a try. I do appreciate everyones replies too.
Isn't there a way to modify a post? After talking with my hub, he said to call Direct TV/Verizon to see what their packages are. So, right now, I am not sure what we are doing.lol

I have Direct TV and I love it! I will never return to cable again. Of course I think I have way too many channels and my bill is getting larger but I still love it. I called them once to get a pay movie...and they told me I was their best customer...humm, perhaps I need to cut back a bit : )
