I'm relocating to the Princeton area soon and would prefer to rent a single family home or townhouse to rent. What are the best ways to view what's available for rent? Craigslist seems to be full of scams these days.

Do you want to be in Princeton proper or would the surrounding areas do? Your budget and commute needs would also help to narrow your search.

About a 15 min drive from Princeton Forrestal Village area. $3,000 per month max.

I'd prefer to rent from a private owner rather than a giant rental complex.

Based on wanting to be 15 minutes from Forrestal Village, you may want to look at Plainsboro and West Windsor also. Some parts of West Windsor have a Princeton mailing address.

I suggest using a realtor. We did when we moved down here in 2008 and needed a rental. Made our search very simple.

How much did using a realtor cost you? Wouldn't I find the same listing on the realtor.com?

Within 15 minutes of Forrestal, I would also add South Brunswick ( which encompasses lots of other mailing addresses such as Dayton, Monmouth Junction... and I am sure others can jump in for more).

We paid nothing to the realtor. A fee was paid to the realtor by the owner of the rental.

On Zillow use the zip code 08550 which is West Windsor/Princeton Junction --- I used to live in an apartment there 10 years ago --- and then click on Remove Boundary.
The housing market is hot but so is the rental market.

I know you wrote you don't want to rent in a large complex, but I would give https://barclaysquareprinceton.com/contact-us/ a look. They all have one or two car garages.
