Commute to NYC? - depending on how far away from the Maplewood train station you live, and where exactly in NYC you work, count on a door-to-door commute between 60 to 90 minutes by train/subway. Frequency of service to NYC along the Maplewood train line is good, and also runs (reduced frequency, of course) on weekends.
If you want to have lower taxes, great schools, and great family friendly community, and also good commute into the city, your should consider Summit NJ, or Chatham NJ, neither are in Essex county.
Wow, I wasn't aware how high the property taxes were. Thanks for the info.
An unfortunate combination of being part of Essex county (hence, having to support Newark/Irvington) and having little in the way of a taxable commercial base.
It's a nice town and worth checking out, just be sure to factor in the taxes when you're looking.
We live in Maplewood and absolutely love it!! The commute is great, the schools are good, but the taxes as other posters have stated are awful. That said, that is the only thing I don't like about Maplewood.
Really friendly community, great neighbors, lots of great places to eat, sweet small town activities, I could go on and on!!
