The crime is pretty high in that neighborhood. Not as high as some other areas, but too high for my standards. Spend a few hours at night in the neighborhood before you buy, and see if you feel comfortable.
It's not the best area, not the worst. I walk down to Lincoln Park from Journal Square from time to time. I never feel unsafe, but I also never do it late at night. You will need a car to get to decent grocery stores, but there is a 24-hour Walgreens within walking distance (have been recent carjackings there reported in the news). If you need PATH trains to NYC/Hoboken/Newark, it's a schlep to get to them. It's about a 20-minute walk to Journal Square PATH station, or you can take a bus up the Blvd. to Journal Square or to the Port Authority Bus Terminal in NYC.
There are a lot of renovs going on around Lincoln Park. It's a neighborhood with a nice giant park, some beautiful old houses, some crappy ones, and lots of mature trees. I think one day it could be a really great neighborhood. But it ain't gonna be tomorrow.
I will be going out there tonight to see what it's like.
Do you think it's one of those up and coming nighborhoods that could get better?
I guess it COULD be. Some people laugh at me for constantly trumpeting Downtown vs the other areas of JC, but the fact is that Downtown has more assets, and that's why it has become "gentrified". If you ask me, the West Side/Lincoln Park area doesn't have a whole lot of assets. For starters, it's not too convenient of a commute to NYC.
welcome to the neighborhood......its not a bad area ..........i moved here around december
there is nothing to worry about depending where ur moving from?
