It was always Taylor Ham, even if the box said Pork Roll. Is there a difference? I am sure there is, I seem to recall it being ordered at the deli counter and sliced...... but maybe that was just a big tube of the same stuff as you buy pre sliced in the vaccum packs in the store..... Well anyway, always Taylor Ham, no matter what the label says.
FWIW, this has been one of the things that I really miss in NC, cant find it anywhere in stores (along with no jumbo sized english muffins.... or really any decent baked goods). Whenever I have been up north by car, I always buy several packages of TH to bring back with me. Am looking forwards to it again being a personal dietary staple.
Even Taylor refers to their product as "Pork Roll." I should know, my great grandfather and two of my great uncles worked for Taylor for many years. Pork Roll was always a staple in my house and it wasn't until I went to college in North Jersey that I ever heard "Taylor Ham." Born in Trenton, raised in Hamilton, currently residing in Hunterdon County.
OK how exactly does this fall geographically? I lived in Island Heights/Toms River and we always called it pork roll. Even if the brand on the box said "Taylor Ham"-we and everyone I knew called it pork roll. I never really heard it referred to as "Taylor Ham" until in my adult years.
My husband was born and raised in Ridgewood and always called it pork roll. He too did not hear people referring to it as "Taylor Ham" until he was an adult-perhaps when he worked in the Princeton/Trenton area.
