Hello,

We are anticipating to move in the middle of school year 2008-2009 from nyc to essex county, nj.
our 5 yo will be in Kindergarten in NYC (cut off date 12/31) with a late october bday.
i understand that in NJ the cut off date is 10/1.

will she have to be placed back into pre-k or can she continue as a transfer kindergarten student in nj?

she is pretty bright academically so i dont think she needs that extra year of pre-k.

also, if we move after she is finished Kindergarten in NYC (which we can probably work out and move later after she is done with K) will she be able to go to 1st grade in the NJ schools?

if anyone knows how the system works, please let me know.

Thank you,
Dia

Why Essex Co. specifically?
What about nearby counties (e.g. morris, bergen)?

It may vary by district, but it's likely she'll be placed in the same grade she's currently in.

I was wondering why Essex county as well. The taxes there are killer. Why not consider Morris County or Union County where the taxes are more like half what they are in Essex.

Check out the property tax difference between these 2 towns:

Moderator cut: snip personal listings

I here many locals talking smack about the Maplewood Schools but do not hear anything bad about the Chatham Schools, In fact I here nothing but wonderful things.

I can agree with others. Taxes are high and prices are as well. Chatham is a GREAT town to look in. Prices are high but you still get more for your money and the taxes won't hurt you; as much.

Then again, short Hills/Millburn and Livingston have excellent schools. I agree the taxes are higher. As far as schools it will vary by district. Cut offs vary as does administrative policy. If you know the town or towns you're considering I would contact the district directly. If your child does complete Kindergarten I think it would be very difficult for them to keep her back...but then again it's NJ. Also be aware that there are still lots of towns in NJ that still only have 1/2 day kindergarten

She will be placed in K if her birthday is after Oct 1st. If you complete 1st grade you can transfer in to 2nd grade regardless of her birthday but if it's only K she has done she will repeat.
