I think Italian is a great suggestion. When my hubby went to grad school in SC, he asked around for where the good Italian places were. People happily told him about Pizza Hut and Olive Garden.
He is also a big taylor ham and cheese person and always had that first when he came home.
When my sister lived in NC, she always requested we bring her those Tasteecakes w/ peanut butter... i think they are called candy cakes.
I wonder if you could get any of the bakeries to fedex you hard rolls or well any bread...,
Try La Bonbonniere Bake Shoppes. They have awesome bread and rolls and it looks like they deliver but I don't know how it would work w/ bread/fresh items.
You guys rock! I knew I would be wise to go to the source. If you could do something about the temperatures and that snow stuff my husband might actually agree to move back! As much as I love chicken parm (and fries w/gravy, but diners are pathetic in the south) I'm thinking the antipasto might be the best for this group. It's more a finger food thing than a sit-down dinner. Now, since I'm of Irish heritage, tell me what goes on a good antipasto platter. And, in return, if anybody finds themselves down this way, I'll spring for the shrimp and grits.
Being the only NJerseyan on my block, I always supply the Italian Sausage. I make it easy on myself and throw it in the oven with onions and peppers, then split them open, cut them in half, and serve them on a big platter with the best Italian bread I can find in my area.
Don't be surprised, however, when they all tell you it's awesome "Bratwurst" and ask you for mustard. Trust me, they will.
Oh, and a nice antipasto platters would have an assortment of olives, some provolone, prosciutto, roasted peppers w/ fresh mozz on top (good luck finding that in Georgia) drizzled w/olive oil....that's all I've got now. It's been too long since I've had a good antipasto!
Add chunks of parmesan, thinly sliced salami, make some picked carrots, celery and cauliflower.
YUM, I can't believe I forgot the parm! And maybe some artichokes? It's all coming back to me......
