Hi, we just moved to NJ not long ago and are considering buying a house. I work in Lyndhurst, and hubby works in NYC. We are thinking about Nutley or Rutherford, but just not sure about the schools. According to njmonthly.com, the Nutley HS has been slipping down the list a lot recently. However I've talked to couple of people and they say those two schools are pretty comparable. We are confused.

Please give your opinions! We are looking for an easy commute for both and a good school system. We are budgeting around $500k. People have recommended Glen Rock, Glen Ridge but the houses are so expensive there and so are taxes. Where else do you think we should also look at? Paramus? Oradell?

Thanks for any insights you may have!

Hello,

We have a lot of posts about Rutherford and Nutley out there, use the search feature on this thread and you can pull them up.

Both are nice towns. Both are pretty notorious for high taxes too, just something to think about. I'd look at greatschools.net or schooldigger.com to get more information. From what I've seen of the 2 districts I'd give the edge to Rutherford Schools, but Nutley's are not bad. You may want to consider Hasbrouck Heights as well if you wish to stay in the immediate area.

If you go above Rt. 4 to Paramus, Oradell, River Edge, you will get better schools - you will also get higher priced homes. River Edge is also pretty up there in taxes.

I would not use the NJ monthly list as your ONLY source on schools, there is a lot more to consider.

Please let me know if you have any other specific questions, I know quite a bit about this area.

Thanks for the comments, EEEPNJ! I've read the threads as you suggested and found them very helpful!

I am of Asian background, not Korean though. I care about diversity very much. In one of the older posts comparing Nutley and Livingston, etc, some were saying Nutley is not that friendly to new comers. Have any of you heard of such things?

If I look out to place like Paramus, anybody know what the commute is like from there to Lyndhurst, and to the city?

The drive to Lyndhurst is not bad, but traffic can be TOUGH. I'm not too familiar with the commute from the Paramus area to the City, but I'm sure others will.

The one thing I will say is that Paramus lacks a "community" feel. It's a big town and there is no center. You have so many malls and lots of congestion. Rutherford and Nutley both have a nice community feel and nice little downtowns. They are both super easy commutes to Lyndhurst. Rutherford does have a train station - so getting to NY is easier. I'm not sure if Nutley had a train station - did not need it back when I lived there.

Honnestly, I think either town would be a good choice. I'd give an edge to Rutherford though, because it is more diverse, it has better schools, and you have less problems (county wide) in Bergen than you would in Essex.

I have a house for sale, under $500k mark, schools up to high school within 2 mile radius, in Clifton near Montclair border. Message me or email me for more info, I'd be happy to show it to you. Bus to NYC is right across the street.
