NorthJersey.com: West Paterson no more (http://www.northjersey.com/news/West_Paterson_no_more.html - broken link)

they've tried to change the name of the town every 5-6 years or so, but the referendums always failed. i'm surprised that it actually got approved this time.

That is real funny. I would think West Paterson has a bad association with it for obvious reasons. It sounds like it is going to be confusing for a while but hey if they can grow out of it good for them.

Maybe East Newark will change it's name next. It's not even in the same county as Newark.

West Orange and South Orange have probably both taken notice. South Amboy too.

agreed, but keep in mind that they wanted a new name that would have the same initials (w.p.) as west paterson. i know that they suggested "west park" back in the '90s, which isn't any better than "woodland park".

what's with all these towns in nj changing names over the past few years? south belmar became lake como, dover became toms river (that one made a lot of sense), washington township in mercer county became robbinsville (ditto), and now west paterson has become woodland park.

i guess even with town names, it's all about marketing and branding so that you seem more attractive to potential home buyers and businesses.

whatever!
you think my Italian family is going to change how they call the town over the bridge? nope.
and also, they SHOULD have pride in where their name came from.
Paterson may not be much at the moment, but it was once something very special, and instead of people running away even from it's name, it could become something special again.
if i were still a WP resident i would have voted against the name change.

I agree. West Paterson will always be West Paterson to me. Anyone that thought a name change would lead to better property values needs their head examined.
