Yeah basically anywhere near Irvington on Springfield Ave is pretty horrific. Irvington isn't a nice town, and hasn't been a decent a place to live for nearly 30 years.

There are definitely good towns out there where you can find houses for $350k. It is not worth saving some money though, if your kids have to live near Irvington.

Just my own rule of thumb. If 1/2 a towns nice, and the other 1/2 is REALLY bad, I dont have anything to do with that town. Because the WHOLE town goes to the same school.

That's true, but thats why a lot of people in those types of towns send their kids to parochial schools.

Dont let 41willy persuad you. Maplewood is a perfectly safe town. There is no "hood" part of it at all. It is very diverse too. And i need to stress how SAFE the town is. Last time I ever heard of Maplewood having a problem is when there were to many kids going to the LIBRARY! Wow. Hardcore **** right Willys?

Well I think there is some confusion here about what exact area we are talking about. The original poster needs to clarify exactly where she plans on moving.

Springfield Ave down by the driving range next to the off-ramp from 78 is ok. If you travel farther east, about a mile down the road towards Irvington it becomes increasingly bad the farther you go. Once you get to the bus terminal in Irvington, then the neighborhood looks really shady. This is the area I was referring to and if this is where the original poster was talking about, then I advise to stay away.

Yes that is true, but then look at this link: Moderator cut: linking to competitors sites is not allowed

Therein lies the debate that is going on here, whether it is a good idea to be living close to the border of Irvington.

we are talking about Maplewood not Irvington. There is almost no spill over.

While I am only moderately familiar with Maplewood and entirely unfamilar with Irvington, Crazy Jersey's comments about spillover could be very well possible. Certainly, there is some spillover, there almost has to be unless there's a wall somewhere. But, I live in Garden City on Long Island and the area is very nice with very low crime. Its borders Hempstead which is not so nice...though no where near as bad as Irvington it seems. There are only minor kinds of crimes on the fringes of GC.

That being said, you have to go look at the area closely and study it. You never know until you see for yourself.
