You need to check re: visa requirements. Like the UK and Ireland, you can't just 'move here.'

I am an ex-NYer and ex-NJian. I now live in Florida (Tampa). I know several gay couples and they don't seem to have any problems. St. Petersburg, FL is particularly gay friendly. Cost of living is reasonable. You may have a hard time finding a job down here though. We do have several colleges like USF (University of South Florida), Tampa University, and some junior colleges.

San Francisco is VERY gay friendly, but VERY expensive to live.

It's an expensive and long drawn out process! OP you need to find a sponsor first. I doubt many schools are willing to sponsor foreign teachers at the moment as it's expensive and there are so many out of work teachers looking for jobs. A pal of mine...Kiwi pal ... over educated, over qualified...ended up getting a position with the YMCA as they were willing to sponsor her. Maybe check out their website...see if they have any openings? Or check out teaching jobs on nj.com. Insofaras where ot what State to move to.... I'm a Jersey Gal through and through so my answer is New Jersey. It will remind you more of Ireland than California will. We have the ocean, we have mountains, we have 4 season... we have have NYC and Philly... it's the best State!

Or maybe try the angle of looking for some school with a program focusing on literature from Ireland (or alternatively the British Isles). You might be able to sell yourself as uniquely qualified.

Thank you everyone for your replies!!I find them very helpful, so far ive been advised to look at Florida, Atlanta, Texas and NJ, its nice to have other recommendations as we were leaning towards CA.

Im looking to go into High School teaching, and my partner and i are aware of the massive paper trail we'll need to follow to move over, but we are willing to do it!

Sholden - you took the words right out of my mouth!
Captain NJ - I would love to help, but at 5"3 i doubt id be very intimidating!! your post made me chuckle though! you'll be wanting to hire some Balaclavas, that'll get your bills paid right and quick!!
Lusitan - thats an excellent idea, my Degree is a combined honours in Eng Lit and Media Studies, and i may go on to specialise in Womes Literature, but marketing myself as uniquely qualified? Brilliant.

Out of curiousity, my partner is a qualified Youth Worker, is there such a profession in the US?i cant seem to find any info on it, she is currently on £40,000 a year as a project co-ordinator so it would be a shocking shame if she was out of work when we move.

Thanks again!
Dee

What are the duties of a qualified youth worker..what does she do so we can match it up here in the US as I'm sure it's called something different

You may also want to add Boston, MA to your list. Very European in feel, active expat community, very gay friendly and lots of youth worker opportunities.

Indeed.com is a good website to look for youth work/teaching jobs.

All the best!

However we are open to other places in America, we would like somewhere we will be welcomed as young Irish Expats. I would like to gather as much information as possible about living anywhere in the Us, Best places to live, work, family friendly areas, Healthcare, pro's + con's etc.

I will have a degree in English Literature and Media studies and will hopefully move in to teaching, how common are teaching jobs? We are a gay couple, are there any parts of America we would not be welcome? We would be looking to rent long term, we can both drive and would be renting a car also. How high is the cost of living?

Do you reccomend New Jersey? i would particularly like to hear from British/Irish Expats.

Il be happy to answer any questions to help your advice giving easier!!

Dee
I'd recommend both NJ and NY. I'm Australian myself.

I've met many Irish, English and Aussie expats who work in New York City.

If you're moving near New York City, I'd recommend Brooklyn. The area is very dog friendly, and very gay friendly (every second car in park slope is a subaru outback ... )
