There are many shops and restaurants in the area of Palmer Square. A short drive out of town will get you to Nassau Park Mall and Quaker Bridge Mall. Some of the restaurants are upscale, some family-oriented, but all rather upscale in pricing, except for Tiger Noodles which is an interesting Chinese restaurant on Nassau just up from St. Paul's RC Church.
In terms of "things to do" for families, there are several parks in the town. The township library is quite large. In town, there is a small movie theater on the corner of Nassau and Washington Streets. A larger UA Cinema is located just off Route 1 S in the Princeton Market Fair.
You can take day trips from Princeton over to Great Adventure (by car: Route 206 S to I-295 S to I-195 E to Roue 537 W) or up to Liberty Science Center (located by Liberty State Park) or take a train to Philadelphia to the Franklin Institute. Grounds for Sculpture is located in Hamilton, NJ which has outdoor sculpture.

Very true. There is a trolley from the station in Princeton to Princeton Junction (5 to 10 minutes). From Princeton Junction to Penn Station, New York City, it's about an hour.
If I had to guess, I'd say about 1 hr and 45 minutes by train to Penn Station (you do mean New York, not Newark, right?).
You will have to change in Newark, but those trains are usually within 5 minutes of eachother.
Maybe someone else will know better about the commute.
Not right to give advice if you don't know the facts:
1. the train from princeton junction to Penn Station is 55 min express, about 110 local.
2. It is a direct train and you do not change at Newark...
Princeton is a really amazing place..you should check it out.
Princeton is overrated and they are having a gang problem in the shools - believe it or not - just google it and you will see.
And remember there are two Princetons with totally different school systems - Princeton Borough and Princeton Township
West Windsor is supposed to have better schools.
Yes, there is a gang problem. Not that serious (murders, etc.) but there.
The Borough and Township of Princeton (as well as Cranbury HS aged kids) share a school system. Highly rated, btw.
West Windsor and Plainsboro have schools that are considered even better. The overall crime rate is about the same, but there is not nearly as much gang influence.

That is one of the problems I have with some of these threads - some people present their beliefs/opinions as facts - NOT GOOD!! It is ok to say "I believe" otherwise the innocent reader could be mislead.
