This is a random question, but I'm headed to a very long concert this weekend (early afternoon to night) and it should be in the low 90's. I'll pretty much be standing in one spot the whole time so not too much activity. I never burn but I have gotten light headed a few times in the heat. I typically will wear shorts and a t-shirt, but my friend said I should wear layers and a long sleeve shirt because it blocks out the heat. This doesnt seem too make much sense to me since I would think it would keep the heat in since my body temp will be higher than the outside temp.

You are right, and your reasoning is spot on. You shouldn't wear long sleeves. Thermal insulation will make you hotter, not cooler.

One thing to keep in mind, is that if it is warm, then you will sweat. If it's dry, you won't notice as much (because it evaporates) but you should be attentive to hydration if you're out in the heat for a long time.

Layers? No.

But if you've got a comfortable, lightweight, white, long-sleeved breathable/cotton shirt, it's a good way to keep the sun off of your skin (think how people who live in the Sahara Desert dress, not in t-shirts and shorts!) and keep you cooler (and safer from skin cancer). Same with a hat.

But I'd never wear layers. Just one lightweight long-sleeved white shirt.

Yeah, long-sleeves are ok, but make sure they are light, loose-fitting and breathe well. Do NOT wear layers, thats just silly.

Also, rock the hat, the sunscreen, and drink plenty of water.

The layering is good for a very short period of time in extreme heat, think oven mitt. It's also the sort of thing that you wear for desert hiking, but you're not wearing multiple layers in the heat of the day.

I have a pair of zip leg hiking pants for the times that I need to keep legs covered but it's very hot outside.

Check out the landscapers that are working in the sun all day, they generally wear loose fitting long sleeve shirts and long pants.
If you want high tech, get yourself a cooling vest
