Thinking about retiring to Ocean County in a few years. Noticed that prices for houses in Whiting and Berkeley are downright cheap.
Is there anything wrong with these houses or the towns?
Are some of the houses really mobile homes?
What about taxes?

The one thing with Berkeley is that there's a bit of a "tyranny of the elderly" going on. There are so many senior citizen residents that the town council is pretty "grey." Of course, if more young people actually got INVOLVED in local politics and went to the town meetings, perhaps their opinions would be heard. Still, Berkeley has an excellent young mayor, Jason Varano, and there are tons of great activities going on in town. Berkeley (Bayville) is very coastal, situated right next to the bay. The Berkeley school district has made some great progress over the years and is on par with all of the neighboring districts. The high school, Central Regional, is a pretty good one from what I hear.

Whiting is actually part of Manchester Township. It's more of a back-woods type place. Honestly, it wouldn't be my first choice of a town to live in.

Whiting has some older/smaller units and it is a bit removed from activities. Nice & safe though. There could be some mobile homes around, but mostly regular housing; many in Whiting are not single-family detached homes; a lot are duplexes or "quads".
