Small lawn and no storm sewers means the sump pump needs to be connected to a 25' hose and drain towards the roadway.

Their bigger issue should be if there is a check valve to prevent water from coming back up the sanitary sewer if things flood. They should just rerun the pipe now and call it a day. Ours used to run down the driveway but we buried it into a french drain over a weekend's worth of work because the hose kept freezing in the winter.

Just tell your friend to solve the problem before their basement gets flooded.
