Home prices in NJ are in the same ballpark as prices in LI. The only place where you can find ANYTHING for $200k would likely be a dump.
I wouldn't say that, there's plenty of nice houses in NJ for under or around $200k, the only problem is almost none of them are within an hour commute of Brooklyn.
i currently live in long island and work in Brooklyn, ny. I am looking to buy a home but cant seem to find something decently priced in LI. I was hoping to find something nice in NJ.
My range is about $200,000, i have 2 kids under 4 yrs old and one of the biggest issues is finding a safe area with good schools. I will be driving to Brooklyn daily so i hope i dont have more than a 1 hour commute each way.
i appreciate any advice, thanks.
Where do you current live on LI? It helps to know to "match" the towns. I would try Clark, Nutley, or Caldwell (all $400k). If you don't mind apartments, try Hoboken ($300k for a 1br, $500k+ for a 2br) or Jersey City (Newport/Pavonia area - ($500k+ for a decent apartment, but it's worth it.)

HUH?? the OP has a budget of $200k or under and you just named some pretty expensive towns! I get telling people to maybe go a little further the commute isn't so bad or even suggesting neighborhoods that are not the safest but suggesting towns where the houses are DOUBLE the budget??? Also I don't think he's getting his car anywhere near brooklyn in under an hour from places like Nutley...

You are right! Vineland comes to mind immediately. You can probably get a nice, newer home, 3 + BR etc, for about 200k. Of course, you'd have to drive 2 + hours to get to Brooklyn from there.
i wouldnt mind traveling a bit further into NJ (maybe 90 minute drive) to get a decent home.
i saw a tour of a 3 bed home in middletown, nj for 234k . is that a decent neighborhood?
i currently live in valley stream in LI and i am pretty comfy here. Only bad thing is that i am on the border with queens and alot more "rough" people have been moving into the area over the past few years.
PS - what about the aberdeen area? or freehold? manalapan?
The towns you mentioned in NJ are not too bad to my knowledge. To me I know what island living is like and I would always prefer to be on the mainland. I get that island fever feeling anytime I'm on LI too long.
dunno about staten island, are schools any good? i never heard too many good things about SI so i always avoided it like the Bronx unless i had to pass thru it.
If it where me I would look at some of the decent suburban towns close by the Goethals Bridge. From many of them you get to SI in 10 to 20 minutes, then you still have the ride to Bklyn, but can't do much about that. Those are killer tolls too. I think it's a buck or 1.50 cheaper maybe with EZPass too.
