Hi All,

I am getting a pretty good deal on a house in Hillside Twp in Union County in New jersey. I am not sure about the area so thought to check with some of you. Does any one know how is this place to buy a property? Is it safe? I need to commute to New York daily. How is the schooling here?

Thanks

Well if you look on a map, Hillside is surrounded by Irvington, Newark, and Elizabeth, three of the worst cities in the state. I would not move to Hillside based on that fact alone.

Out of those 3 cities many times being next to Irvington is though. Didn't used to be that way decades ago but that is "progress". Also I would check out what the schools are like depending on how old your kids are.

Hillside taxes are exceptionally high.

Hillside spells 100% disaster. It has struggled the past decade or so, but has been constantly losing the battle. Do not purchase a home there. Like others have said, it is following the course of its neighboring towns. Try Kenilworth or Cranford.

Do the names Camden and Trenton ring a bell?

As for the OP's question, Hillside is a blue collar town. I don't see property value getting too much better there and I really don't think it's the type of place you'd want to settle the rest of your life. Everything there seems old and run down and it has a lot of trashy people. I remember I went to a Shop Rite there and people would just open up bags of chips and start eating them, spill the rest on the ground and not care. People let their kids run over the store and spill things. That kind of crap and even though it's nicer than Irvington and what not, it really seems with Hillside is the people there really don't care about maintaining their city. There are worse cities in Jersey but I can assure you there are a lot more better cities.
