The girl and I are looking to buy a single-family home in a nice (safe) town that has to be at most 45 minutes from Wayne/Parsippany. Besides Parsippany being an option (not interested in Wayne), what towns would you reccomend? We gross just under 100K total and are open to a condo/townhome if it's reasonable enough (no super-high montly association fees or nasty 1950 apartment to condo converts).

By the way, Morris County is a plus.

Dover, Wharton, or Hopatcong. Some of these places approach a 45 minute commute to Parsippany though, during rush hour traffic.

What do you think should be the max we should spend on a house? I know car payments, etc. all affect this answer, but generally speaking or broad estimate would suffice.

If you plan on having kids, then about 260-275k, assuming 10-15% down.
