Christie says layoffs can be avoided, though, if school employees agree to one-year salary freezes and to start paying 1.5 percent of their salaries toward their health insurance premiums.

Thousands Of Students In New Jersey Walk Out In Protest Of Proposed School Cuts - cbs3.com (http://cbs3.com/local/walkout.school.students.2.1658638.html - broken link)

Doesn't sound like that much of a sacrifice. I don't know what a teacher makes in NJ, but lets say its on average $50,000 dollars. 1.5 percent of that is $750 dollars.

Giving up a raise for a year, and helping to pay toward your own health care during these very rough financial times isn't asking for an awful lot.

What we need to do is consolidate school districts. We don't need 600 different administrators with 6 figure salaries. We only need about 1 per county (give or take a few for some of the more densely populated areas)

That needs to be done all across the country.

The Mod cut who organized this didn't do it for the "sake of education", she did it because her mother and her sister are school employees who could lose their jobs.

BTW, their town voted down the budget.

Oh, and there's also this: The Facebook page that was used to organize this protest was written in all lower case, horrible punctuation, and bad grammar. Way to show the quality NJ education that you're "fighting" for, homeslice.

The kids who took part in this protest isn't some sort of "Donna Martin Graduates!" grassroots effort. It was basically kids who wanted an excuse to get out of class.

If the admins have some guts, they'll nail the kids with suspensions. If they don't, then it'll look like the NJEA endorsed this, proving Christie right about his drug mule comments.

Perhaps that will save the state money. But if you think ANY of that saved money will be passed on to you in a form of, say, property tax reduction...you are dreaming.

Agreed.

As for the OP the budget shortfalls are far too much to be made up with salary freezes. For most districts layoffs are inevitable.

I'm still wondering why the kids in Newark walked out. Their budget passed.

The protest was over the loss of funding at the state level and was aimed specifically at the Governor. Just because the buck got passed does not mean they are not still irked.

Maaaaaaybe they should start asking why funding at the federal level was blown off by the NJEA. I'd be irked about that - wait a minute, I am irked!

And if you look at the pictures on NJ.com, it appears most of those kids were either mugging for the cameras or just looking for an excuse to ditch.

A little more on the Mod Cut:

She's 18 and goes to school at a private college in New York. No kids. Not a tax payer. So she literally does not have a dog in this fight outside of the fact that she's trying to save Mom and Sis's job.

Her sister is a secretary. If she loses her job, it's not exactly hard to find a new position - but she'd actually have to work during the summer! THE HORROR!
