i was spoiled in bayonne and didn't realize it until I moved out. not only is there 2xs a week pickup, but you can put *anything* out and they'll take it (the joke is you can put dead bodies in the cans and it's no problem). now, it's once a week, recycling once every 2 weeks and you need a sticker for bulky items (at about $10 a pop). Oh yeah, and we have to pay for garbage service too.
I spent most of my life with one day that doubled as recycling day and you could put out anything and they would take it. When I lived in Moorestown they had one day in the winter and two in the summer and you had a seperate bulk day. The town I live in now does it similar. We have one day for both trash and recycling with the robotrucks and between Memorial Day and Labor Day they up it to twice a week for both. Yard waste goes out once a week on a different day. We also have bulk and hazmat (paint, chemicals, etc.) day's but you have to call to get put on the list. It's free but you can't just put it out.
I never really got the twice a week thing. I guess it makes sense in the summer when people are cleaning out their houses and having parties, but it really doesn't seem necessary. For a family of 5 we generally don't even fill the 55 gallon containers we have when they are only picked up once a week.

A lot of homes in Bayonne are 2 family, very close together so theoretically you have twice as many people in one house. The population density is also somewhere around 20-30K ppsm so you kind of need garbage pickup on a regular basis, lol.
In Cranford (union county) we have 2. Only problem is we have private garbage haulers and they take nothing but the cans. We can pay to have them haul away household items but they charge unreasonable amounts!
Hello people!!! Think of who used to run the sanitation industry in our area( and still does in one way or another). I'm surprised we don't have garbage pick up everyday.
2X per week - Wed/Sat
and as of a year or so ago, the Wed pickup is also recycling, using the 2 cans the town gave us (1 for paper, cardboard, etc. and the other for plastic, glass, cans)

Can you take household items over to a county facility, or something? Here the town will take anything you leave out, but in a pinch you can ride it over to the county recycling yard and they have containers for literally everything you could ever want to get rid of.
I've lived in several New Jersey towns, and there were always two garbage nights. The recycling schedules varied, though. In one town it was paper every two weeks with cans/bottles on the alternate week. Where I am now it's cans/bottles on Thursday, which is also a regular garbage day, and paper on Mondays, also a regular garbage day.
