My husband is from Jersey, Im from Brooklyn and he is pressuring me to move to Jersey specifically Garfield, I dont know anything about it and need help before I say yes.
A lil about us, we are a young couple with 2 young lil girls. We are Irish German decent if that helps....
I personally would pass on Garfield, but that's just me. I feel there are much nicer places in NJ just as close if not closer to the city for the same price. Any reason it has to be garfield?
Why would you pass on Garfield, see the issue is he got a house offer for close to nothing there, so its not like I have a choice where in NJ. THe only thing I can say is NO i dont wanna take it... Just dont know how Garfield is...
Its not a bad town just not as nice as surrounding towns, I personally would not want to live there. If its extremely cheap go for it, just go visit it first.
Garfield schools are suspect even if you don't have kids resale of your house will be affected.
It also shares a border with Passaic (not that nice of an area in general) although it is seperated by a river.
If it were me, I'd try Saddle Brook or Hasbrouck Heights. I lived in Lodi (borders Garfield) with my wife and young daughter and we liked it but it's not the place we wanted to raise our kids. We spent a lot of time in the two towns I mentioned and liked them both and they are both a stones throw from Garfield.
Incidentally, we ended up moving to Wayne where I grew up.
I live here. It's not as bad as Passaic, but not as nice as Saddle Brook or Lodi. Hasbrouck Heights is a lot nicer, too, or the towns over there like Rutherford. Garfield isn't super-dangerous, but it's not nice at all, & it's starting to get worse. Passaic would be the first worst city near here, Garfield is second. The schools are really bad, you need a school ID just to open the door, & it's an Abbot District. The parking is really crazy too.
If you are getting a house is significantly less then current market value and has sellability, then there's no harm. It's NOTHING like Brooklyn so you're in for a culture shock. That being said, if your purchase price is right take the starter home, sell in 2 years, make a profit and find a home in a better town. I live in a nice town with a crappy school system and send my kids to private school. Came from Brooklyn myself and it was a hell of a culture shock. But its grown on me and I like where I live now.
