There's enough for us locally, though we lost one very popular place over by Holloman on the road to Las Cruces. It's okay, we have more. We still have several local clubs along the 54/70 main drag. No biggie...what you lose in bustle you'll have rewarded with serenity, minimal traffic, politeness, and attitude. I have been here almost a year so far (this time) and can say I FAR prefer the southern NM style to the bustle, traffic, and clustering of Albuquerque where I was twice for a year at a time. It just seems so... New Mexico down here, and I've only seen one place along Route 54 where in the past someone accidentally paved over some ruins of interest which are now being unearthed by archaeologists. Everything else, the whole tapestry of time, is open to inspect and gawk at down here. We have the old west, timber towns, gold rush towns, ghost towns, skiing, Casino-Inns, Golf courses, the White Sands, State Parks, Fort Stanton, other monuments, camping, R/Ving, and the Valley of Fires. just to name a few things and places to go and gape at. Carrizozo where the book of Eli was filmed, has it's own quaint Pub, White Oaks where the films Young Guns and Young Guns II were filmed has a famed saloon which rocks. Cloudcroft, about 40 minutes up Route 82 in the Sacramentos has a few watering holes and great eateries and places to stay. Someone told me parts of the SyFy series Stargate is shot around the Tularosa Basin here somewheres. Heck, you can even pan for gold on your weekends...We have any kind of food you'd want to eat, just in a less populous area, and a healthy balance of socializing and solitude when you want it.

You know what, I can't think of any 'Gay' bars in Santa Fe.
Then again, I don't get out much. Too old for the bars and I don't like DWI jail.

I think Alamogordo is pretty conservative. One time I landed in San Francisco and someone I was sharing the ride van with advised me that she and her husband were ready to move to either Las Vegas or Alamogordo. I asked if she'd been to either place and considering the politics of these places versus the Bay area and she said 'no'. I told her she might want to reconsider or visit those places extensively before making to decision to relocate there.

I suppose in relation to much of the rest of the state, Alamogordo is probably considered conservative, along with Farmington and a few places in far eastern NM.

I keep hearing how the religion here is in your face, but I have yet to be approached around town by someone trying to convert me.

A few have come to my door, but that's easily solved by just not answering; they'll go away sooner or later, even if they leave flyers.

Nobody has ever gotten in my face politically, either--not here.

Cathy4017: Usually, towns with military bases tend to be more conservative, IMO. I don't really care whether it is or not, as long as the people in the town are friendly and one can feel somewhat safe.

tw_turtle: I don't want to discuss religion here. You're entitled to your opinion. There's a forum for all of that on this site.

I'd say yes on both counts. I like having the military here, too. The military retired I've met are neat people.

Are you going to be stationed at Holloman AFB?

I guess all I can tell you is be grateful that Alamogordo is approx 67 miles from Las Cruces.

Cannon AFB in Clovis, NM is over 100 miles from Lubbock, TX.

You said you're from Jersey. OK...when you get to Alamogordo, please do no criticize the town if front of the locals. It won't be helpful, it won't make you feel better and nothing is going to change. Just be very polite to everybody.

Jersey and Alamogordo are two different worlds. Do not expect things to be remotely like "back home". During the week, make lists of the things you need to buy. Plan your shopping and your entertainment around weekend trips to Las Cruces.

See if there are any outdoor activities you might enjoy in Alamogordo.

Good luck

I'm originally from El Paso, have lived in Las Vegas for 14 sad years, I hate this city. My son who's 15 got into some trouble with bad peers, he's doing great now and we want a new start. My daughter is 19 and attending a community college. I will be leaving my good paying County job in lue of peace, nice weather, decent and good people. I will be working from home as an interpreter, not earning a lot but enough to live well.

How is the environment? Boring? Outdoor activities? Four seasons?

I'm sure a teenager would find it very boring in Alamogordo--probably endemic to the species, LOL!

If you're originally from EP, the weather in Alamo is no different other than a very few degrees cooler in the summer, which isn't saying much. We had our first real winter this year in the 3 years I've been here.

We have mild winters and hot-as-hades summers. It's actually pretty great here weatherwise other than May through August or September.

If you like hot weather, the above won't be true. And....having lived in LV, you know what hot is.

Lots of outdoor activities in the area, especially with Cloudcroft and Ruidoso so close.
