You speed, you may get stopped, and you may get a ticket. Then someone will call it a speed trap...
Some communities are very protective, they don't like their people being killed by reckless drivers, it still happens all the time. Some Police Officers are protective.
I have been stopped one time in New Mexico for speeding since 1998. It was a rural area, I was given a polite verbal warning.
I usually drive the speed limit due to some unforgettable events 30+ years ago...
I read some pretty nasty stories online on various websites that talk about how shady the NM State police and Najavo PD can be along Interestate 40 and other highways.. stories about people being pulled over while going the speedlimit and being ticketed for going over. etc etc. Is it that bad? Tell me what you've experienced.
Out of the myriad times I've been pulled over, the one time I was ticketed and in no way deserved it was on I-40 just west of Albuquerque. I was doing 65 in a 65 (the officer mistakenly believed it was 55 due to a construction zone, even though I produced video evidence to the contrary).
It would not surprise me if a few dozen other motorists got caught doing something similar and simply paid the fine.
That said, I would not be surprised if I never got pulled over again in my lifetime without deserving it.
I've planned a trip for this coming fall to NM, and although I don't speed much I do drive a decently fast car that loves open roads so I decided to look up the speedtrap info on NM. I have no idea why you posted this drivel. If you drive the limit you'll never be bothered anywhere in the USA.
That was true many years ago, but I don't see ANY enforcement in the past 14 years that I've been living in the area full time. Perhaps because they don't want to rile the tourists who might not stop at their two casinos (Inn of Mtn Gods and travel center on US-70) if ticketed.
That could well be. I seldom if ever saw any law enforcement either when I was there, but I never went over 5 over the limit through the rez anyway. It's the ones you don't see that are most likely to get you (and they know where to hide). Besides that, I was too busy digging the scenery!

Two areas one really needs to watch is U.S 550. The first is northbound coming down the hill, dropping into Aztec. Signs are posted in advance as you're coming right into downtown. And the law does run radar through there. Same for 550 southbound coming down the hill coming into Bloomfield from Aztec.
I've been pretty lucky, I've put an awful lot of miles driving in N.M. and fortunately haven't been stopped but once. I was coming in to Carlsbad on 285 in January around 7 in the evening and had electrical problems (headlights and no tail lights plus no dash lights.) The patrolman was good about it as I told him I was staying the night at the Motel 6 in Carlsbad anyway and would go to a parts store first thing in the morning. Surprisingly he didn't even call it in.

That's complete nonsense.. plenty, including myself have been stopped while going the speedlimit. You clearly haven't traveled by car anywhere but your town.
