My best friend lived on Rojo when we were both in high school ('60s). Those WERE the days when you could walk all over town and not even be out of breath. Not anymore!!

I do agree tho, it's really nice to know it's not going to dry up and blow away..altho..it may BURN to the ground if they don't get some rain soon!!!

It's not an exciting drive from El Paso to Hobbs especially from Carlsbad to Hobbs. If i remember it's around 3 hour drive from EP to Hobbs. Hobbs does have the newest Horse Race track and Casino in New Mexico the Zia Park and Black Gold Casino.. There's a couple of fishing lakes in town. It's mainly the oil production capitol of New Mexico as that's why it exists there.
Black Gold Casino - Zia Park Racetrack (http://www.blackgoldcasino.net/page.cfm?content=7 - broken link)

My husband and I agree that had we not been happily married and ready to start a family, we would not have stayed here when we moved here back in 1994. It is a small city that does not have much to offer in the way of entertainment except for living vicariously through your children. There are lots of sports leagues and a ballet school and many other activities for small children. Unfortunately, there is not much for teenagers or young adults unless they are good enough to be on school teams which narrows considerably because there is only one high school. Speaking of that, people who graduated high school here attend the games as though it were a college team and it is the biggest Friday night activity in the community. There is nothing wrong with this, however if you did not grow up here, it is not very appealing to go to these games unless your own child is playing or cheering.

Bottom line, though, it is not that bad. I joined this forum at an ironic time because I don't like my job and want to leave it, but cannot find another one that we can afford. I have my Master's Degree but it is not in anything technical and that is about all that is needed around here unless you are a male oil field worker.

My husband is a 13 year police veteran and anyone who says the crime rate is not bad is wrong or lying. Yes it is probably nothing compared to big cities, but per capita, Hobbs is just a rough place. Many who live on the north side in insulated environments don't even have a clue as to what the crime is really like. Methamphetamines are the major entertainment for about 30% of this population.

Don't let the bad stuff scare you. There is tremendous potential here and like I alluded to before, if your priority has become your children, this is a family centered community.
Can anybody reinterate on what kind of technical jobs there are around Hobbs. My family lives in Seminole, TX, and I was looking to move to the area around Hobbs but my background is in Networking, Server and Desktop Support, Unix Operation. Just wondering what kind of technical jobs there are in the area, and which companies have them?

Default Can't Believe It's Almost A Year....

My youngest son moved to Hobbs. It will be a year this October and find it hard to believe. He is single and didn't find it hard to get an apartment or job. It took awhile to adjust but I can't believe all that he has accomplished in almost a year. The adjustment was the weather and the fact he seen snow not gators. Did get in some golf, looking for a tennis club. Said maybe in time a golf & tennis club. Hobbs people are just as warm and friendly as they were a year ago, just met a few more is all. He sees opportunities and more to come. I sure wish the Dutch couple and kiddies the very best luck and success in Hobbs NM.
