The word is that come Jan 15, 2013, a NM driver's license will be considered insufficient identification to board a plane. For the past several years, this has been pushed back, but it sounds more serious this time.
Although there are many aspects of the Real ID act that New Mexico is not yet in compliance with, many are hanging on the "illegal aliens"' possession of New Mexico DL's as the reason. Anyone know if that's actually the only substantive reason?
In any case, I sure am glad we don't live in a country where "papers please" becomes required to travel, like those silly soviets.
I think it's obvious that a state that doesn't require citizenship or even legal residence before it hands out drivers licenses and basically gives one to anyone who applies for one, does not have a drivers license that proves citizenship or identity.

The original thread pertained to boarding a plane with a NM driver's license.
How many incidents have there been since 9/11 that involved someone using a NM driver's license?
Now, how many incidents have been caused by individuals using the "accepted" driver's licenses from other states? Add up all the actors, professional athletes, etc.
The push to not accept the NM license does not seem to be based on any facts that can be demonstrated to enhance nat'l security, but instead, on bureaucratic speculation (TSA). The more likely reason is simply because The Man wants it that way. "Papers please" indeed, Zoidberg.
No - New Mexico is an American city, tried and true. It has more conveniences there than I thought. I don't think my wife and I are going to need to head to El Paso or Las Cruces all that often. Apparently you'll need to filter your drinking water, though, or else just buy bottled water. The drinking water is not copasetic.
