I did a lot of research.

Big difference is that in NJ there are very few Lenape.
It seems that in the west there is a lot more of a living Native presence.

I now have something I know about the area to draw me out to Albuquerque region.

Before I just picked it, cuz of the weather.
And bec. it isn't New Jersey.

thank you for your informative post.
I have a lot to learn.
It is definitely quite different out here on that front. In most of New Mexico Native Americans are the third- or even second-largest ethnic group (to say nothing of the large swathes of reservation or checkerboard country where they are the largest group). This is true even in cities: here in Albuquerque proper Natives make up nearly 5% of the population.

Where would I find out the qualifications for teaching the basic sciences in predominantly native American schools? I am an environmental Scientist that has been retired long enough to start getting bored and I have wanted to move to NM for decades.

You should begin here for information on reservation educational systems:

http://www.bia.gov/WhatWeDo/ServiceOverview/IndianEducation/

Bureau of Indian Education | Home

Otherwise, tribes have autonomous authority over who is hired to work in their jurisdiction, afaik.

MY friend Beverly taught at the Zuni reservation for years and really liked it. The diet was horrible -fried bread and other greasy stuff. Although there is not necessarily a causal connection she did die of cancer at a young age (50).

I currently teach at a Navajo-run high school in NW New Mexico. It's terrific in many ways.
PM me if you'd like.
