Is that area above La Luz on the "back road to Cloudcroft" I've heard some refer to? I really need to come back out there and have a look! I love that whole area of the state.
(Not that I need an excuse to come out there! NM got into my soul in the early 1960s.)

No - that usually is a reference to the paved state hiway NM-244 which runs from a point just east of Mescalero to Cloudcroft, where it intersects with US-82 to the east of town.
The road up to La Luz is paved up to the Nat. Forest boundary, but the road into Cloudcroft through the forest is tricky if it's not been graded recently. There is another road from "The Orchards" that runs to High Rolls, as shown on the attached map.
The road from La Luz east is labeled "Laborocita Canyon Rd." It turns into "La Luz Canyon Rd. (Forest 162)" where it enters Nat. Forest Land and continues on to Cloudcroft, with several options. The road across to High Rolls is labeled simply "162 Rd." and is mostly clay and can be tricky when wet. There are spectacular panoramic views out over the Tularosa Basin from this road since it is not heavily forested - only scattered junipers. I didn't mark it on the map but "Fresnal Canyon Rd." connects La Luz more directly with High Rolls over a washboard gravel road. There are some houses scattered along it at the lower end.
joqua: I tried to rep you, but couldn't. Thanks for the information. I was thinking the "back road to Cloudcroft" was the Laborcita Canyon Road. I know about NM 244, having been on it many times on my motorcycle (great road). Since it's paved and on most road maps, I don't consider it a back road!

I guess it depends on who's doing the talking. When I've heard the term "back road" it usually refers to NM-244. US-82 thereby being the primary road into and out of town. Not that many people even know about La Luz Canyon road. But there are also two other paved roads that lead into Cloudcroft. The Sunspot Hiway (NM-65) and the Cox Canyon Hiway (NM-130). I suppose these could also be called "back roads" by someone.
We have lived here for years, nice low crime good place to raise kids.
There's alot of out doors activity, if you like rock hunting on four wheelers, dirt bikes? not much snow, except for last yr.
But over all decent views of moutains, cloud croft 30 miles if you want to visit snow, then come back down to no snow, that is some times a blessing.
Housing market is decent,Hope to have helped your question.
Alamogordo isnt bad at all. Town really doesnt have alot, but an hour away is great.
