I probably enjoyed this series more than most since I have a lot of first-hand knowledge of the area in which the stories are set - the Tularosa Basin region. I would recommend that anyone with an interest read the three novels in the order in which they were published.

Hard Country

Backlands

The Last Ranch

Just finished Hard Country and will now begin Backlands since I finished Wives of Los Alamos last night. Yep, the descriptions are great. It's hard for me to imagine navigating those distances on horseback. Heck, the Quebradas byway alone was a half day by car!

Hiked a few miles on the Journada. I can see why the name. No quarter.

I like McGarrity's Kevin Kerny novels, still need to read the last one, but I don't like it when some of his translations miss the mark...kind of lessened my opinion.
