Unless you already have a job or have money to wait for a decent job, of which there are few, do not move to New Mexico. It is literally the rich, workin class poor, down and out, government workers, lots of illegals (over half of any casino is illegals). It's really Mexico ya know....only INside of what was formerly known as the USA.

Remember, the whole country is in a recession so jobs won't be easy to find anywhere and no, I don't think Silver City would work for you. Of course you posted this a while back, so probably you have already made your move if you are going to.

Salaries are low in NM, but the job market is better than in most of Or. What type of job are you thinking of? Are you a single mom or will there be two incomes?

You may want to look at cities closer to Albuquerque or maybe even Las Cruces. Of course finding a reasonable living place for your family isn't going to be easy.

And do you have a job?

One of the reasons we left NM had to do with just what you are saying, it is a welfare state. Because of the give aways too many don't even bother to consider finding work and the teen pregnancay rate is awful.

People bragging about living off of the t*t of the government isn't so great either.

Well gosh nita, while watching the news recently, I believe they said it was Mississippi which had the highest number of teen pregnancies in the whole USA. I'd like to see some stats on other states, but I broke my search engine yesterday. I'll just bet Alaska has to be a tight second, because there's not much to do up there except watch tv, get drunk and smoke crack. I watched a special recently, and Anchorage has a really bad gang problem.

I can't search for anything right now, this windows vista operating system gives me headaches and heartburn.

Do I have a job? is that a catch 22 question? do you?
What was your MAIN reason for leaving New Mexico? Did you get reassigned?

I agree 100% Nita. When we moved here, we moved from what I considered to be a very politically liberal state, New Jersey. After having lived here for almost 5 years, I've come to the conclusion that when it comes to economic conservatism, New Jersey is actually to the right of New Mexico. I don't know if there are many other states that match New Mexico when it comes to the mentality of "spreading the wealth around" the quote that was made so famous during last year's presidential campaign. There seems to be a trenchant mentality here that 'takers' have a right, through state funded programs, to benefit in a myriad of ways, at the expense of the 'makers', which I believe are not very high in number. New Jersey might be further left when it comes to social issues, in fact, I know that to be true. I can tolerate this more, however, than what you coin 'the welfare state' mentality. In New Jersey, this mentality is limited to poor cities. Here, it's almost everywhere. I never knew anyone personally in New Jersey, for instance, that deliberately surpressed their wages, or mis-represented themselves financially, in order to gain eligibility into a program, such as "pregnancy Medicaid". In fact, I've never heard of such a program, until recently, when my wife relayed to me an incident of someone we know of, who did just that, in order to gain admittance into such a program. That same person has a $400 cell phone, her husband last weekend supposedly went to a tattoo parlor, and had two new art stamps applied to his skin. They have a brand new car, a 3 year old house, a Nintendo Wii, a PS3, to boot. And yet, they suppressed their wages in order to apply for a program I've never heard of. And that's just the latest story I have to relay here. I know of another person who, on the state's dime, had a gastric bypass surgery done, on Medicaid, because she was a single mom at the time, and declared the surgery necessary for work. I could name more of these little incidents here, but I won't bore you, or continue to infuriate you, with them. My only point being that in all my years living in New Jersey (and they far out number the five years I've lived here) I NEVER heard of anything like this. I never knew or met anyone that intentionally shanghai'ed the system in order to benefit personally from it.

I really love living here, in many aspects, but this is the one constant, the one impediment, that I envision will drive me from here. I can't stand the mentality I just wrote about. It's like cutting to the front of the line at Wal-Mart, because you don't want to wait, and you think you are more important and worthy of a service than the others behind you.

Yes, Mississippi does have the highest rate of teen pregnancy, but many are married teens, not that makes things all that much better in many cases. I don't think I ever said, NM has the highest, just that it is very high. I think it was second or third to be exact. I am not positive.

Why did we leave NM? Well, for a couple of reasons. The number one reason, to be a little closer to our kids but there were other issues as well. Don't get me wrong, I happen to think NM has a lot to offer and we do miss our wonderful friends, but the state is truthfully a welfare one.

Do I have a job? As a matter of fact, both my husband and I do and we could certainly be retired. We both have chosen to work part time so we can remain independent and have enough money to enjoy a few things. Do we have a lot? Absolutely NO...

Nita
