He was amazing to watch, and the first one I've ever run into. Apparently they're pretty thick up in the black rocks that the petroglyphs are carved into.
Good pictures. Glad you could lean over the wall to get the closeup. There are many at the petroglyphs in Three Rivers so we only go up there in the winter. there are so many cracks in the rocks.
Yeah, a tourist visiting from Missouri was actually the first person to notice him. He calmly walked into the Vistior's Center and let the Rangers know. When the Rangers saw how close the rattlesnake was to the path, they decided to move him. Apparently if he had been further off, they would have kept a close eye, but left him untouched. The Ranger in the photo said you have to be a careful combination of firm and forgiving to control them and not break their fragile ribs, so she prefers non-physical means first. She moved him to a spot not too far off where he had a clear shot to the familiar warm rocks of the west mesa, and as the last photo shows, he wasted no time heading there. Everyone there treated him with respectful awe. I've had some great run ins with road runners, families of quail (who can't love a covey of baby quail?) and horney toads, but the rattler will stand out.
Hey, with threads like this, you don't have to worry about too many people coming to New Mexico...eek. I know when I was in El Paso, there was a little kid that got bit by a rattle snake at a 7-11.
Aren't these snakes protected? If so can you call a state agency to have one removed if its in sight..?
I was demonstrating at Petroglyph, on Albuquerque's west side during Balloon Fiesta when this guy decided to show up:

Nice to see your photo's are still on this thread where you posted them Zia.....and not on other threads where another poster Hijacked them and posted without your permission and thankfully the mods removed them .
Really made me think twice about all of this. I'll think twice about sharing in the future.
