What is the Edgewood area like? Too built up anymore? I moved four years ago from New Mexico to Washington but am seriously considering moving back.
The new Wal-Mart in Edgewood opened this week and today the Dallas Cowboy cheerleaders appeared there. So maybe that helps give you an idea of what Edgewood is like.
offroad - thanks for the warning. Wal-mart is the kiss of death for a community. Local stores replaced by a purveyor of cheap junk on credit. Not an improvment IMHO.
Edgewood is getting increasingly pricey and suburban in my opinion. The area is growing really fast and may not be what the original poster wanted. You might like Alamogordo. They have good schools and amenities, but you can also easily get a country place.
Water quality is an important factor. Many of these areas have extremely hard water, so you might look at precipitation levels and trends, especially considering climate change.
There is a gorgeous "off-the-grid" community called Evergreen Hills in the Albuquerque metro, near the La Luz trailhead in the foothills -- unbelievable views, dark, starry skies, surrounded by jagged peaks and pinon trees. About 12 houses, I think. Mostly lovely custom, some more affordable. A couple of things on the market up there!
