best grocery stores in garden district/uptown (New Orleans: buy, live)

where would you recommend to shop when you need everything (from mustard to paper towels) and would rather not shop at the most expensive place in town? i've heard that whole foods costs a fortune- i've never shopped there before, so i don't know. i'm moving soon to the lower garden district and wouldn't mind driving anywhere uptown. i think the place i found with the best online reviews is rouse's, but i'm interested in your opinions. thanks!

Rouses on Tchoupitoulas. It's where I go most of the time. Breaux Mart is overpriced and I save Winn-Dixie for late night trips.

For hard to find local and specialty items, scrumptious prepared meals, and truly good service no grocer in New Orleans compares to Langenstein's. The produce section isn't as vast as in the big boxes, but the butcher counter is excellent. For produce try the farmers market every Tuesday morning at the old Uptown Square (upriver parking lot, Leake near Broadway) which offers the absolute freshest seasonal products all from growers and artisans in our area. There, instead of slogging through Whole Factory, you can buy Smith's Creamery milk (yum) straight from the Mr. & Mrs. Smith who'll have driven it in from their farm that very morning!

hope i can make it to that farmer's market, it sounds amazing... i might have class though.

what are your thoughts on winn-dixie? a friend just recommended it.

Winndixie is aight, that's where I usually shop. Just get the discount card. There are some decently priced item others can be had cheaper at walmart and sometimes rouses. I say experiment with your grocery list and take note of the prices at different stores for your regular items. Is there really a farmers market in old uptown square at the end of broadway on teusday mornings?! If so I'm going I never knew and live walking distance from there.

Exactly, Its amazing how the cost of different things vary between the different grocery stores. If you really want to save on groceries you could find yourself going to 4 or 5 stores to make one list.

Why not goto Walmart? That's where I shop. I even take Breaux Mart, Winn Dixie, Rouses, Langenstein's ads to Wally World because they will match competitor's prices. I imagine we save 20 - 30 bucks a month @ Wally World (this includes gas because shop in one place and time). From toilet tissue to steaks all in one place (I think that rhymes). I use to shop @ Rouses until I found out that Walmart carried my favorite whole grain cereal for $1.00 less. I don't owe the Rouses family any loyalty. I don't understand why so many people try to avoid Wally World. Oh well. Good luck with your grocery store hunt.

One good thing about Rouses is the umbrella service when it rains. Last week they walked my expecting wife to the car.

Wal-Mart is lacking when it comes to local foods/products. That and I hate the lines (it's best to get there right before the close in the case of the Uptown Wal-Mart). I buy dog food and everything else from Wal-Mart, just not food unless I need something quick.

A great way to get in out if you have under 20 items is to check out in the Jewelry department. Works like a charm.
