I will be moving to NOLA this Summer. I have been there on business before, but never lived there. Which areas are the best? Although I have a car, I really like to walk places with the kids & dog. Also, are any of the public schools alright or should I plan on private schools? I lived in DC for 12 yrs and in Cleveland for 3 yrs. I know to be aware of my surroundings at all times. Any feedback would be helpful. Thanks!

My preference would be Uptown, Mid-City, or Lakeview. Denser development and lots of walking areas. Plan on sending your kids to private schools no matter what neighborhood you end up in.

Broadmoor is a part of Uptown, and it's gorgeous. We just moved here a month ago and we do a lot of walking in the neighborhood. I see people walking along with their kids all the time, or kids playing out in the yard. I don't know if it's important to you, but it's not "all white" either. Everyone is very friendly and, with the exception some remaining storm damage, the houses and yards are all kept up very nicely.

If you don't mind a commute, the northshore areas of Mandeville and Covington are quite nice. The public schools are the best in the state, there is virtually no crime, and there are quite a few good places for walking.

Thank you everyone for your replies. I will look at Uptown. Broadmoor sounds like an area we would like!

Lakeview is quite nice, not really my cup of tea - I LOVE the river - but it's nicer than any "lake area" I've ever been to. I can certainly see the appeal.
