I currently live in a housing connect building and was accepted into a new building managed by the same management. HPD approved me since early last month I already did a pre move out and all and management is giving me a hard time to sign a lease for the new place. It feels that because they will loose money they are trying to keep me here a extra month so I have to pay rent in my current place and also pay rent in the new place. I have been sending emails to my agent and she has been ignoring them does any one know what to do in this case ? That the reason I am getting anxious is because I went through DV where my ex stole my spare keys and since then has been entering my apartment while I’m not here police won’t do anything sadly until something happens and management is aware but have not responded
Not to dismiss your difficulties at all: Leaving an apartment with a lease still in effect is universal. You either work it out with the management or pay off your lease. If it was the same building, I'd say give it a low tempered argument but that's not the case here. I truly hope your ex is not on your new lease.
In the meantime, if only your name is on the lease, pay whatever the building charges to have the locks changed and put a note out that no other keys are to be given out as a matter of security. If your ex is on the lease, that's a more complicated issue, but you're getting out soon I hope.
Contact Safe Horizon, let them know what's happening, they will help you get out fast and/or pay whatever is owed to the old building so that you can leave. Wishing you safety and hope all goes well!
