"Over-rated" is relative to expectations - you expected something, got something else. I have no idea what your friend was expecting, so I have no idea why he found it disappointing.

"Is NYC overrated tourist wise"? No, it's a great place for tourist.

Ah. You're right. Good catch. Thanks for the tip/correction.

just don't go to Times Square. I loathe that place. Everywhere else is awesome.

I think my fellow nyers can agree with me....... New york has the ability to amaze NATIVES from time to time. Theres no way a tourist(somebody new to dis) can say its overrated, thats disrespect. New york is to great for that. There are plenty of things that get critical acclaim and is overrated. New York City is not one of them. Its exactly what you think it is and more

Is NYC overrated?

Not according to travel surveys.

For example, TripAdvisor's travel survey;

Quote:
NEWTON, Mass. – June 25, 2009 – /PRNewswire/ TripAdvisor®, the world's most popular and largest travel community, today announced its American city survey of more than 3,400 U.S. respondents revealing opinions on the best and worst of major U.S. cities.
Favorite City
1. New York City
2. San Francisco
3. Chicago and Boston (tie)

Least Favorite City
1. Detroit
2. Los Angeles
3. Atlanta

And not according to Travel + Leisure's to the annual "Worlds Best Cities" survey;

Quote:
The list was topped by New York for the eighth consecutive year, followed by San Francisco, Chicago, Charleston, S.C., and Santa Fe Next were three Canadian cities, Quebec City, Montreal and Vancouver, with Savannah ninth on the list and the British Columbia city of Victoria at No. 10.

Among world cities, Bangkok was named No. 1, followed by Buenos Aires; Cape Town, South Africa; Sydney, Australia; Florence, Italy; Cuzco, Peru; Rome; New York; Istanbul, Turkey, and San Francisco.

The 13th annual World's Best Awards were based on a survey made available to Travel + Leisure subscribers, who were asked to rate destinations, properties, and travel companies they had recent experiences with. More than 11,000 readers participated.
Travel + Leisure ’s 13th Annual World’s Best Awards Readers’ Survey Results Announced - PR.com

(and every survey I can find puts NYC at #1 when it comes to favorite US city, but I don't think there is a point posting them all)

And finally....

It's not overrated according to the millions of travelers tho travel thousands of miles to visit New York City (far above any other city in the US), according to the Department of Commerce;

Most visited cities by overall overseas travelers 2009

1. New York City - 7,792,000
2. Miami - 2,661,000
3. Los Angeles - 2,518,000
4. Orlando - 2,399,000
5, San Francisco - 2,233,000
6. Las Vegas - 1,853,000
7. Washington - 1,544,000
8. Honolulu - 1,497,000
9. Boston - 1,140,000
10. Chicago - 1,118,000
11. San Diego - 618,000
12. Philadelphia - 594,000
13. Atlanta - 570,000
14. Houston - 428,000

And domestically

Quote:
MANHATTAN — It looks like New York City just showed Mickey Mouse who's boss.

Despite a nearly 4 percent drop in travel to the city between 2008 and 2009, the city that never sleeps overtook Orlando — the house of mouse — as the most popular city destination in the United States for 2009.

Oh my god, yes, NYC is tourist wise overrated. Today, some girl was taking a photo at the sky or something and she had her arms up and was walking and smashed my eyes. That is how CROWDED tourists make this city. People call NYC dirty because they're from stable, clean small towns and not used to seeing millions of people at a time.

I can see how someone from Smalltown, U.S.A. might find NYC dirty and gross. I did when I first got here and I still find it **** dirty... but I love it, and revel in the filth! It is life. If I went back to where I came from, with its pristinely trimmed suburban lawns and neatly arranged, perfectly scrubbed shopping strips I think I just might scream....
