So I'm thinking about relocating to Queens. I am considering going to grad school for Public Administration. Long Island University (Brooklyn Campus) and Baruch College both offer programs. the CUNY one seems more legit, but I would probably go to whoever accepted me and offered the best money. Are either of these schools accessible from Queens by public transit? I really don't want to have a car. Also, if I were to go to school full time and work part time, would Queens be affordable? Suggest neighborhoods as well that would be good for a young person (23). I am open to roommates. I have heard good things about Astoria, Ridgewood, and Sunnyside.
I'd go for Sunnyside. Lively and close to Manhattan, but not as much on radar screen (or as expensive) as Astoria. Ridgewood, well, I haven't been through there in years ... no doubt it's the cheapest, but it's way out of the way.
If you end up at LIU, you might consider Long Island City. The G train to Hoyt-Schermerhorn is pretty convenient to that school, but unfortunately only runs reliably to Court Square in Queens these days. LIC has been "up and coming" for a while now; I don't spend a lot of time there but I hear it's a bit of a poor-man's Williamsburg, and has at least some interesting things going on that might be appealing to you.
F to 23rd street if you go Baruch, otherwise you'd take the F all the way to Brooklyn if you went to LIU...a hell of a commute. you can also take the E and transfer on 53rd and lex to the 6 train and get off at 23rd. if you live in ridgewood you can take the M and then transfer on essex to take the 6.
It will be easy to get to Baruch from Queens (I used to go there and have always lived in Queens). Depending on where you you choose to move, it will take from 1/2 an hour to an hour. You should go for the CUNY! I went to 3 different CUNY schools when I was switching around majors - they're affordable and good schools.
I've heard good things about Astoria, and you'll have an easy commute. There's a lot of things to do and a lot of young people there.
1) If you are cost-conscious, you might consider Woodside instead of Sunnyside, LIC or Astoria.
2) I'd also sugges Middle Village & Ridgewood. While they aren't widely popular with single, 23 year-olds, in terms of safety, affordability and decent transportation, they are pretty good. Actually, the Q54 bus gets you to Williamsburg in about 15 minutes. Transportation to either school via the M train and a transfer would be about 45 minutes.
