staten island is the best bet. there are so many catholic and baptist churches arround. and the schools are nice unlike most areas of brooklyn except for brooklyn heights.
i have houses both in brooklyn heights and staten island and yet, i have chosen to live in SI, cause it's more family oriented. we hop on the train to the fairy to go to Manhattan everynow and then, but on weekends we drive to the city no problem. we've got best of both worlds..
I would chose either the southern part of SI princess bay pleasant plains or tottenville or in the center todt hill. if you chose public schools then you should definitely stay in tottenville region.
good luck

One thing I think needs to be remembered, when considering SI, is that it is still part of New York City. It's not a suburban oasis where one can isolate themselves from the issues of NYC, since the schools, police, fire, taxes, etc. are all directly tied to the other boroughs. Yes, there are some suburban-like enclaves, with single-family homes, but there is a difference when living in a house in the city, versus a house in a suburban small town/village in NJ or on LI.
