With today's economic troubles and so many people hurting, perhaps now would not be the time to lessen the gun laws. Emotions and tensions run high when you are out of work. People have a problem thinking straight.
reminds me of a buddy of mine... the officer in charge of the investigation for his permit called his wife to see if she has any reason that her husband should not be granted a permit.

the officer said to his wife ,to tell you the truth i have seen your husbands driving record. i have to say your are safer with him with a gun then sitting next to him in the car. ha ha ha ha

Suffice to say I don't trust the vast majority of people's judgment in the matter, and am quite in favor of not allowing people to pack weapons with them everywhere they go, just because they want to. If they are, the screening process should be rigorous and very exclusive. Carrying a weapon in out in public is a far greater responsibility than keeping one in your house or behind the counter at your business.
My husband and I would sometimes watch those reality police shows on tv and commented that those police are on camera, which is why they are so polite.

His little meetup with them during the mugger episode really changed that. Who would expect that police from such a big city as New York would have been so nice? Now, they really look fit and trim and don't resent it if you ask them directions on the street at all. What a change.

I cannot see a cop in NY not carrying a gun, but I see your point. Some would be a little more polite, probably, if they did not have that gun to back them up - but that is just some.

as long as bloomberg runs this town, the gun laws will not change, so forget a CCW. if you really want to carry, go ahead and take a firearms course so you learn gun safety, get as many CCW's from surrounding states(PA, CT, forget jersey), as you can, so you know how to handle your weapon and you know the gun laws..then get yourself a nice small kahr 9mm or maybe a .380, a carry rig like this SmartCarry - Concealed Gun Holsters and carry illegally. obviously, never pull it unless it's life or death, then, if you survive, the law won't be your first concern. better to be judged by 12 than carried by six.

I think the necessity to be able to kill another person a block away is not necessary in a civilized society.

Default civilized

You are assuming that this is a civilized society, throw just a little monkey wrench into your civilized society and it becomes the wild west in days if not hours.

hey ,you never know when a truck may get in the way.

on a serious note though im not sure what this comment is supposed to mean in regards to the above comments? are you saying a .380 is for hitting targets a block away? i think not! perhaps 10 or 15 feet away is about the limit of its effectiveness in the handguns that utilize it. most can barely be aimed. . like a snubby, a .380 is a belly gun for that up close and personal feeling.
