So while I am no fan of 2016 Times Sq even after being there today in passing mainly, and I liked the variety of the old TS, I am glad young teen runaways are not facing a huge NYC sex industry blocks from the bus terminal.
Rest assured that this still exists. Time Sq. gentrification likely did not impact that "industry" whatsoever broadly speaking.
I once met someone who put herself through art school working at peep shows. Very successful now.
The online porn market did, but getting rid of it blocks from where teen runaways come in was a great benefit to those kids.
Maybe, then again maybe not.
Just who do you think are acting in all that "teen" gay and straight porn found on the Internet and elsewhere?
The same runaways/busted/broke or even drug addicted teens that once sold themselves in places like Times Square or 53rd and Third are recruited to work in porn. That and or the vast indoor (largely Internet/smart phone based) prostitution market.
Persons who employ/abuse these teens know where to find them and how to recruit.

They do, but the street level pimps no longer have the convenience of a bus station and workplace in walking distance.
I used to go and see low cost karate movies and check out triple features of regular films for 5.00. Also they had pizza, hot dogs, and burgers for super cheap. As a 13 year old I could afford to go and pass time with my allowance. Not anymore.
I can imagine the super hung heroes were alot cheaper as johns than today. Anyone here ever seen cruisin with al pacino? It makes de niro's taxi driver look like a prude virgin or better yet it makes brüno look pg.
I remember reading quite a bit about Times Square and 42nd Street and saw some pictures of them from the 1970s and 1980s and I was absolutely shocked by how disgusting it looked. I remember my Dad taking the subway through NYC to Yankee Stadium back in the early 80s and seeing the Times Square station absolutely trashed. He said that back then you could get mugged in broad daylight if you weren't careful.
I was born in 1991, so obviously I have no memory of the pre-clean up Times Square. I'd just like to how bad it was from anyone here who actually did live through it.

I went to New Year Eve in 1978 in Times Square. Back in the "wilding era". Around midnight we had whole wolf packs of black teens mugging at will. Cops did not want to get off horses or go into crowed. I saw this couple come out of a broadway show right before midnight, guy in tuxedo as back them folks dressed up. He got jumped and rolled asap. Around 15 of them kicking him while they took his wallet and snatched her purse. They were attacking multiple people. And more then one sets of folks wilding. Then one cop had balls to try to charge forward with horse. One teen tripped and horse stepped on his mouth and blood and teeth everywhere and cop took off.
Just them they turn towards me and my brother we were both teenagers. We dressed like crap and had almost no money and had drank a few colt 40s while waiting. Yes you could drink beer and **** on street back them.
The head guy with his crew of 15 turn around and he takes two step forwards to us and goes what are you looking at? My older brother pushes me behind him and slowly reaches into top pocket of his army/navy coat and pulls out half way the handle of a huge gun. Everything goes silent if you could imagine in Times Square. The gangleader quickly realized he was not close enough to grab gun, but being a few steps in front of his gang any one of his gang moves forward he is getting shot. He yells whoooaa Dillinger, we dont need no guns in here, he starts backing up. We take off like a rocket ship, they chased us a few blocks. But trouble was I was on ninth grade track and brother on 11th grade basketball team. We could run for miles. Pot Heads, crack heads and half drunk gangmembers in their 20s are not catching us.

Times square had phony ID places, switch blades shops, you could buy guns, topless, bottomless places, x rated movies, three card monte. Honestly by 1980s it started cleaning up.
Mind you I grew up in the Bronx and I am a pretty big guy, but even then not a place you want to be drunk in a suit back then unless you wanted to be pick-pocketed, mugged or stabbed. Go look at that old movie 'Midnight Cowboy" and see some pictures of Time Square back in the 1970s

A kid in my neighborhood had a knife like that. The gun 'look' went up as far as having a real rotating revolver barrel and trigger. He would pull it out, point it at you, and pull the trigger so the blade popped out and say "Bang!" Scared the crap out of me. What an a-hole. But I wished I had one so bad.
