I would suggest looking in Queens if they want to be in the city, but it may not be in the most convenient location, i.e., not walking distance to the subway. They may have to take a bus to the subway. Another thought would be to look in NNJ, especially along the PATH line in Jersey City and Newark. Westchester also has some extended stay hotels, but even in White Plains those close to the train station are going to be toward the hihger end, of the hotels with which I am familiar such as AKA. If they had a car, it would not be a problem in many parts of NNJ and Westchester to stay within budget, but then transportation costs would not be inexpensive, either, using the commuter rail. The PATH is economical, and areas like Jersey City can be just fine without a car.
