Prior to 1998, the (B) ran to 168th Street/Washington Heights during the weekdays (from about 6AM-9PM), and the (C) ran to Bedford Park Blvd (serving the Grand Concourse) during rush hours, terminating at 145th Street during the middays, evenings, and weekends (during some years, it would extend to Washington Heights on the weekends, and other years it would stay at 145th Street).

During that time, the (A) would run local between 145th Street and 168th Street to compensate for the lack of (B) service. From about 9PM to midnight (and all day on the weekends), the (B) would serve the 63rd Street corridor (the (Q) served it on the weekdays).

In 1998, the service was switched to give the (C) access to the yard near Inwood on the (A) line. After that, it was the (C) that went to Washington Heights, and the (B) that served Bedford Park Blvd (terminating at 145th Street during the middays). During the evenings and weekends, the (B) still terminated at 21st Street/Queensbridge to serve the 63rd Street corridor.

Then, in 2001, the Manhattan Bridge Reconstruction occurred, and the (B) was reduced to run from Herald Square to 145th Street on the weekdays (being extended to Bedford Park Blvd rush hours).

In 2004, the current pattern we know today was created.

So the Washington Heights route has served the 163rd Street/St. Nicholas Avenue station. If you lived in Washington Heights before 1998, you had the (B) serving the station, but after 1998, it was the (C) serving it.
