Considering moving within a couple blocks of 110th and Lexington. Possibly 111th, 112th, or 117th. Any thoughts on this area? Crime and safety most notably?
Its a high crime area and also the area has quality of life issues, I know the area very well because my gym is located there and I have walked in this area during different times. There is some gentrification taking off in the area. On 104 street and lex there is a tapas and winebar and a zagat rated mexican restaurant which has many patrons of all colors. I have also noticed an increase of young transplant whites in the area, some live in the tenements across the streets of the pjs of 110th street. I also have seen some hipsters walking about on 110th street as of late. If anything at least east harlem is still manhattan.
I don't like it one bit.
I often walk up THIRD to 110th for some cheap shopping and that is sort of okay, but not farther up.
Too many unsavory looking projects on Lex even past 99th.
I'd WALK there very occasionally (I like cheap Latin food) but I wouldn't want to ever call it home.
fba,
Would you be moving into one of the several NYProjects in the area...at least you could then justify a low rent? But for market rent, look elsewhere.

I'd say walk away, but I do realize you must choose among alternatives ...some not pleasant, and I;m not in your shoes.
I THINK you can get a $1000 studio in a better neighborhood.
Is it because it's loud and trashy, or because it's unsafe?
Really,go and walk around the neighborhood for a few hours on a Saturday night( tomorrow) and ask yourself how safe you feel and if you want to live there .Do it in the evening around 9,10 or 11 and then go back again at 1 or 2 AM.Walk from your future subway stop to where you are considering living and wander around the neighborhood.Be sure to walk by the nearest projects too.If you see a bar,go in and have a drink and check out the scene.Do this alone so you get the real feel of the neighborhood.
Only YOU can tell how YOU would like it.
