If he's living in Astoria or Jackson Heights, transit is perfectly doable. It's cheaper to take a bus, and then call a car service when you're in a rush than it is to go through the hassle and expense of owning a car. Parking in western Queens is pretty hard.
Now if he lived east of Flushing Meadows, a car would be easier (though transit would still be somewhat doable)
