i'm hoping to move somewhere in the nyc boroughs in the spring of next year. i'm trying to find a safe, lively, and affordable neighborhood somewhere in queens or brooklyn. trouble is, i've never spent any time there..it's always been my dream to live in the village, but my rent range is $850-$950 and not $3000...sigh...
when i say 'safe,', i don't mean a quiet, 100% gentrified neighborhood...just a bustling place where a single, mid-twenties woman (with common sense) can walk around alone without extra hassles (no stretches of dark, deserted blocks full of warehouses...) i'm also hoping to find a spot in a lively place, i'm not moving there to enjoy the suburbs, i'm looking for city life! i'm willing to live in a teeny studio with no kitchen if necessary.
people have recommended astoria, queens village, and flushing in queens, and williamsburg in brooklyn...any reviews or suggestions? any help would be really appreciated.
gravesend(south brooklyn by bensonhust, maybe that area too)
you can still find 1BR area around 900 and its very safe, but its much quieter than city life
You might enjoy Jackson Heights in Queens. I think it's doable on your budget. It's definitely lively, and perfectly safe. A few pluses are that it has tons of different varieties of cheap ethnic food, and depending on where you end up in the neighborhood, it's possible you will be close to the 74th St./Roosevelt Ave stop on the E and F trains which take you to Manhattan in 3 stops.
You might get a good sense of at least the food options in the neighborhood by checking out chowhound.com's outer boroughs site. There are always tons of postings about places to eat in this neighborhood.
Also don't overlook Astoria and Sunnyside also in Queens.
Also know this, many older people in Bensonhurst, Dyker heights, and bay ridge own 2 family homes.
Many times they dont need the money, but they dont want to apartment to go to waste. I have friends and have heard other stories of people paying below market rent just because the owner really liked them. My friends father is an ex-cop and he pays 700 a month for a 2 br in gravesend.
Another friend offered to take care of some outdoor landscaping and pays below market rent. As silly as it sounds, its true.
