Every time I try to get from my parents' house in Albany back down to Virginia, I get stuck in a mess trying to get from 87 S onto 95 S. There's got to be some simple way to do it, but damned if I can figure it out. Yesterday my GPS brought me over the George Washington Bridge at rush hour. Last time I took a wrong turn and got stuck on the Tappan Zee Bridge for over an hour.

Is there a way to avoid all this and bypass NYC traffic altogether???

17 or 287 as the connector instead of going 87->95, going 87->17->287.

I mean I literrally googled albany, ny to virginia and those were two roads that bypass NYC alltogether were the recommended routes.

Where in VA? If you can link up with I-81 instead, just take that down through PA and MD. Skip most of the tri-state region altogether. Lots of connections if you head west a little.

Hampton Roads. Honestly, I'd like to bypass the tri-state area if I can--I always wind up in a mess. I'll look that one up--thanks, Liz!

And Energystream--I'll look into that connection, too. Thank you!

Just took a look on a map. I-87S to I-84W to I-81S to I-83S to I-95S. You'll meet back up with 95 around Baltimore. May add some miles, but that should far outweigh the hassle of going through NYC. Doesn't look hugely out of the way. I also like switching roads every few hours rather than being on one road. Breaks up the monotony.
