New York: $7,211 (25%)

In NY State, we pay on average 25% more in state, local and other taxes than the average state in the US.

And now another fee/tax is being added to support maternity leave for new mothers? When will it end?

It will never end. Those of us who do not approve of the spending, tax, and regulatory burden imposed by NYS(C) on businesses can either learn to live with it or relocate. There is no wishing it away. I'm inclined to exercise the latter option but it's a little too soon right now.

Agreed, it will never end.

Part of the problem is that schools brainwash students with progressive philosophy and do not generally teach alternative viewpoints. This has produced a bumper crop of voters for the Democratic Party. However, even when Republicans are elected, government continues to grow, just at a slower rate.

Also, human nature is such that people tend to see only the immediate benefits of these government programs: free gifts! But everything has a cost, and sometimes the costs are not apparent or are longer term.

This is correct.

Do you still live in NY? Considering relocation in the future?

I do live in NYC. I've been considering relocation for a couple years now but have not acted on it. One barrier is that I have not driven a car in some time and hate driving. No doubt I will end up moving at some point either by choice or by getting priced out.

In addition to income taxes, NYS/C has a nearly 9% sales tax. Those paying market-rate rent are also implicitly subsidizing the rent stabilized/controlled folk. Also a good portion of rent goes towards NYC property tax. When you add it all up, many people are probably paying 50% of their income to the government in one way or another.

But that wouldn't be "income tax".

Not that this is a surprise, but I also wonder if NYS also gives more than it gets back from the federal government, in comparison to the average state as well? https://wallethub.com/edu/states-mos...vernment/2700/
