Hello. I am thinking of moving to the Rockaway peninsula, but I am concerned about safety. I am a single female and will be commuting to and from Manhattan, and sometimes coming home late at night. Are there any particular areas that are better than others? I am looking to purchase property and many prices seem reasonable.

Thanks for your input!

I've lived in Rockaway my entire life (next month makes 31 years). Any specific questions, ask away.

For starters, take a look at the NYC Safety Maps: Queens in the "sticky" part of the NYC page. Far Rockaway (the eastern extreme of the Rockaways) is the inner city.

Safety does vary by neighborhoods in the Rockaways but the Western half is generally considered to be quite safe (100th PCT) with the areas above 116th being the safest. Though thats not to say it doesn't have its own hotspots (ie Hammels Projects) that you probably don't want to be to close too. The Eastern half (101PCT) gets a bad rep because of Far Rockaway because that has bad crime rate but areas like Bayswater, I believe are quite nice and generally safe.

So it depends really on what 'end' you were more generally interested in I think.

What part of Rockaway? What is your budget? Do you plan to commute via subway or bus?
