Back in the early 80s I used to buy loose joints 7 for $5 in Bryant Park. Now look what they've done to that place!

Interesting. I just booked a place on airbnb on 44th st. between 8th and 9th. Thought the only drawback was the Times Square vibe...

How about 54th at 7th ave? I was up pretty close to their over the weekend. That can't be bad, can it?

What if those guys were undercover cops fishing for buyers?

I know, it sounds pretty, but that's what accounts for almost 50% of all arrests in the city.

That was actually my primary assumption.

That area is near good/large hotels, suit-and-tie businesses, etc. Police precinct is on 54th near 8th.

I really wanted to "score" rolls there, yet had a very tough time. Not a huge deal, but this thread is yet another reminder how NY folks don't realize how much is unique to NYC.
Really? I went there last year for a week and I was offered drugs dozens of times a day. The entire city is an open-air drug market, especially in the areas around Golden Gate Park.

Ok, you actually got me there. I WAS offered drugs upon walking into GG Park a couple of times. Nowhere else though. I did live and hang in the nicer parts of town, though. Had I hung out more in the Mission or GG park areas, it may have been different.

Yeah, the bulk of the dealing was in Mission and GG park, but I got offers all over the place. Mind you, I'm a young guy who doesn't really keep a professional appearance. It's probably assumed that I want to buy drugs.

So it looks like I'll have to do the same no eye contact dance in Manhattan!

that section you speak of on 8th Ave between 37-42nd street was always like that. It was never part of the Times Square BID that started in 1992. What was always a problem with prostitution, drugs and other vice was 8th Avenue north of the Port Authority. In the early 70's a section of the sidewalks along 8th Avenue between 45th and 49th streets was blocked off at certain hours by the police in the night due to rampant illegal activities that intimidated passersby, hotel and store owners. In 1979 the Guardian Angels set up their headquarters on W 46th street just off 8th Avenue. In the late 80's W 46th street between 8th and 9th (Restaurant Row) was overrun with crack addicts and dealers.
