Hurricane Sandy Victims: I met a FEMA lady who flew in from Hawaii. She told me that if you have been offered a loan, FILL OUT THE LOAN APPLICATION. They know that you don’t want a loan, but they need the paperwork to continue the process. If you don’t, your case will die out. If you are still turned down, you can file an appeal. She told me that people are getting checks and to not give up.
She also told me that if you were without power for a week or more, to call 311. Con Ed is reimbursing people for food lost if your power was out for more than 7 days.

Yes....You have to follow the paper trail. That is what happened in North Dakota too.
Just heard of the pending storm headed up your way. Prayers going out for folks still recovering. Be safe everyone.
If you lost your job or income because of hurricane sandy, you can apply for disaster unemployment assistance, from the same place you apply for regular unemployment, the Labor Department.
There's Disaster Food Stamps, and the City can also reimburse you for food you lost during the storm, in addition to Con Ed. Various charities are also helping out with clothes, including work/professional/interview clothes that you'll need in order to return to work.
Make sure your FEMA money is only spent on rent, they will want proof of that.
