I'm in St. Albans visiting friends and I have to say, since I've been here in NYC, it's one of the best neighborhoods I've seen. It's also close to so many public transportation but it's like 45 mins to and hour to midtown on the E train. Anyway, I could live with that. Is it easy to rent houses here or apartments? I've checked online and absolutely no apartment or house renting in this neighborhood. Or do I have to go through a broker?

The neighborhood does not have a lot of rentals because its mostly single family homes. What you could try is to visit some of the neighborhood delis/bodegas and see if they have a local newspaper. Local newspapers are often the best source of finding rentals in off-the-beaten-path neighborhoods.

In NYC the biggest problem is not a broker but rather the landlord's credit check--- if you find one (I am not aware of that neighborhood) the norm is the landlord wants you to have an annual income of 40 times the monthly rent . If you meet those terms then look on Craigs list for broker free places. In many neighborhoods it is all brokers because the landlords don't want the hassle of trying to rent a place.
